In 1843-1844 Shortland made journeys from Banks Peninsula south, making surveys of native settlements and notes on a variety of topics along the way. Shortland spoke Māori and had a good grasp of Māori history and politics. There are accounts of the gathering and harvesting of fernroot, the preparation of tī roots, kelp bags of preserved muttonbirds, sandal making, scent from speargrass, construction of raupō boats.
