Ngā Rauropi Whakaoranga

Makes a strong case for the value of properly prepared Phormium for rope making. Ropes, prepared from Paretaniwha and used for rigging on his schooner not worn in 15 years. States that only 3 or 4 varieties worth cultivating - names Paretaniwha as best, followed by "Owe" (sic) "by some erroneously called Tihore". Describes planting technique and stresses need for all glutinous matter to be well washed out so that flax can hold tar. (See Black, June 1871)
