Notes that the variety "Owairaka Red" and variants of it comprise 80-90% of the total kūmara crop in New Zealand. "Owairaka Red" was selected in the 1950s by the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research from the Waīna variety, introduced by whalers in the 1850s.

The paper reports on kūmara cultivar trials designed to evaluate a range of imported clones and assess their sprout production, yield and quality under New Zealand conditions.
