Detailed article on the techniques and designs used in decorating house panels. The vertical stakes consisted of the flower-stalks (kākaho) of the toetoe (Cortaderia spp). The vertical rods were of stalks of bracken fern, tōtara or rimu. The flexible material for stitching the design was harakeke, kiekie or pīngao. Kiekie was preferred to flax because of its whiteness. Pīngao was used for its orange colour.
