Ngā Rauropi Whakaoranga

wharangi kura (Williams 1971); arorangi (Best, recorded in Cheeseman 1925), akeake (State Conservator of Forests 1877). 

Strong, musky scent. Likely to have been used for scent (Best 1942).

Best 1942 says aromatic gum was collected and chewed by the Māori.

Shrub or small tree. Found from about Thames southward. Similar to O. ilicifolia with a strong, musky scent. (Salmon 1980)
