In California, barges with mowers harvest(ed) the floating fronds commercially. The chief extract is alginate, a valuable colloid, ingredient in much American ice-cream ( Moore & Adams 1963).

Current harvest in New Zealand used for manufacture of kelp powder and kelp salt for the health food market ( Schiel & Nelson 1990)

"Laminarians" (sic.) are the best seaweeds for garden manure, being exceptionally rich in both iodine and potash ( Moore & Adams 1963)
