Notes
Author discusses the adaptation of the kūmara by Māori from a perennial species, as in tropics, to an annual. Kūmara introduced in warmer climate period and probably initially grown as a perennial (division by stem cuttings). As climate cooled Māori used the root of the plant for reproduction.
The Māori also developed storage practices to ensure the survival of their kūmara stocks for both food and propagation. Cultivation methods were developed to fit the plant"s requirements: e.g. erecting fences to divert cold winds, spreading gravel round plants for heat retention.
Some notes on other food plants of tropical origin.
