1) Williams 1971: a term applied to all finer varieties of flax, the fibre of which could be disengaged without the use of a shell. (same as Tīhore)

2) Best 1942: a superior variety

3) Andersen 1926: strong-fibred varieties

4) "Specially used for it"s (sic.) fibre, which has a greater density and quality of fibre than Tāne-a-wai and Turi-ngā-wai. It has a very hard texture for plaiting and basketry. Grows to 6 ft." (Resource notes, Teachers College, Christchurch?? Author unknown)
