Trotter Michael M. 1972. Investigation of a Māori cave burial on Mary Island, Lake Hauroko. Records of the Canterbury Museum 9(2): 113-128
Notes
A description is given of the cave, the bodily remains, and the flax fibre cloak that partially covered the body. Cloak construction is discussed. It is probably the oldest recorded example of a tied-fibre cloak. Kaka (and some kakapo) birdskins with feathers were hitched into the cloak. Radiocarbon dating places the burial in the latter half of the 17th century.
