"The wide distribution of tapa in Asia and the Pacific, and linguistic evidence associated with its production, testify to the Proto-Polynesian antiquity of tapa production". Essay explores the history and prehistory of the use and cultivation of paper mulberry. Its natural range is shown to be East Asia and Mainland Southeast Asia. The origins of Polynesian cultivars are discussed.
