Church A. H. 1871. Chemistry of Phormium tenax. Appendices to the Journals of the House of Representatives G - 4A: 12-17
Notes
Age and development stage of fibre much to do with its chemical make-up and strength. Fibres easily affected by chemical reagents and boiling water. Phormium fibres readily wetted by water, leading to decay. Oil with wood tar can be used to prevent entrance of sea water into ropes. Can immerse briefly in sulphuric acid to toughen and waterproof them.
