Of ethnobotanical interest - references to flax trade. Kapiti Island described by McNab as a "flax emporium". A writer in 1837 says of Otago that "the flax plant grows luxuriantly and the fibre is of good quality. Esculents are also abundant and obtainable at a very low price."
In Cook Strait, turnips and potatoes sold to whalers.
