Harakeke cultivar. 1) Selwyn 1847; found at Maungatautiri, Manawatu, Whanganui and Pātea Rivers. One of varieties of flax under Tīhore i.e. flax scraped with a fingernail only

2) Williams 1971; a superior variety of flax

3) Best 1942 ; a fine variety

4) Mantell, Maungatautiri Flax Commissioners Report 1871: a fine kind

5) Viv Gregory Collection, Kaitaia ; His notes record the name Kāhunga. Very long, black-edged leaves, dark green in colour, beautiful fibre but hard to strip. Fibre is obtained by beating and soaking. Top quality korowai fibre, very white and soft. Has many kōrari. Only good muka flax which bends over. Muka flax. Used for mats.
