Description
Pre-European kūmara cultivar. Yen 513-1. White skinned, white fleshed cultivar. Sent to Japan by Dr Yen in 1966 for safe keeping. Returned 19 November 1988.
Belmont type (under classification system devised by H. C. Thompson 1922 and 1957)
Yen collected the cultivar in Northland only. Plant very similar to Hutihuti. Some leaf variations (described) and the root is somewhat smoother. Yen states that the Māori in Northland are definite that this is a separate variety from Hutihuti. ( Yen 1963:37)
Name only listed by Colenso 1880 (found Hawkes Bay, East Coast) and Best 1925.
Hammond 1894 says known at Patea and the West Coast of the North Island.
