Shrub or small tree. Local occurrence in coastal forest, North Cape south to about Tokomaru Bay (Salmon 1980).

Tangaru-rake is said to be a species found growing on the summits of high ranges, where scrub alone prevails. (Best 1907) [Olearia furfuracea? Olearia ilicifolia? Ed.]
