Toropapa leaves are extremely variable in leaf shape. The shrub is often confused with unrelated speices such as horopito, ramarama, maire and pigeonwood.

For instance, Alseuosmia pusilla (matukuroimata) bears a strong resemblance to small plants of Pseudowintera axillaris (horopito)
