Kūmara cultivars collected from Maori settlements in North Island in 1954-1956, including 4 pre-European. Grown in trial at Otahuhu. Other material added from Polynesia, Melanesia, New Guinea , Asia and South America. Geographic variation in agricultural practice, and plant variation and characteristics, discussed. Study revealed it is a single species, and affirm an American origin, with secondary centres of variability in some Pacific areas (Hawaii, Easter Island, NZ ?, New Guinea, Philippines).
