Manuaute means "The bird made of aute". Parkinson, on a visit to the Bay of Islands in 1844, got cuttings of aute off chief Patuone, but he failed to propagate them. Kite-making - aute originally used in form of tapa, stretched on frame. Heads still sometimes made of aute. No record of use of aute in form of tapa - used in form of strips of inner bark.
