1) Best 1898, 1907; inferior variety, grows in swamps.

2) Best 1942; variety with dark edged leaves

3) Williams 1971; i) hūhi = swamp ii) a variety of flax with dark edges to the leaves

4) Andersen 1907; inferior variety for rough work

Roots of the Hūhi variety of flax are roasted and chewed as a cure for constipation (Best 1908)
