Floating aquatic plant, dark red where exposed or glaucous, green leaves. The name kārearea is also used for duckweed, Lemna minor.

Get some kārerarera from the creek or a pond and put it into a bottle. Used for babies when they are scalded. Rub the kārerarera on the scalded part. (P. Smith 1940)
