Letter records discovery that rope prepared with oil lasted much longer in the wet and was more supple. Hector is reported as getting the information from an old Māori woman. He asked her how the fishing lines lasted so long. She replied "we always keep our hands anointed with the oil of the weka when we are plaiting them"
