Written after six and a half years with C. M. S. Mission in New Zealand. Based on journals, written on journey home. Wrote at a time of rapid internal change. His descriptions of Māori customs among earliest recorded in 19th century. "Must be treated with caution. Fairly observant, but tended to claim personal experience when reporting hearsay." (Dr. J.
