Ngā Rauropi Whakaoranga

Paper presented at the 7th meeting of the Hawkes Bay Philosophical Institute. "The native trees which contain tannin are (1) the Tawero, synonymous with Towai (Weinmannia racemosa, Forst). (2) Whinau, (3) Toatoa, (4) Tawai, (5) makomako, Yellow Kowai, and others."

Colenso related first use of barks of New Zealand trees for tanning at Ngunguru (Between Whangarei and Bay of Islands) in 1839-1841. Extracts of the barks used, with specimens of the trees producing them, were sent by Colenso to Sir W. J. Hooker.
