Notes usefulness of flax to Europeans. Nelson "finest flax district in New Zealand". Describes berries. "Pitoku" (sic.) - sweet, pleasant tasting. Karaka - describes detoxifying process, "taste...seldom relished by any but natives". Pulpy part of middle of stem of "tawara" or "astilia" excellent substitute in pastry for apple (when cooked). "Tūpaki" berry - "natives make a wine taste exactly similar to elder". (Coriaria arborea) Kawakawa tea - pleasant and aromatic. Narcotic and purgative in effect. Mānuka is an "excellent substitute for tea"
