Twenty-eight recognizable languages developed in Polynesia. The Polynesian colonists carried many plants with them and recognized identical or similar species in their new homes. The names for these plants now vary from each other, but the differences are often predictable using linguistic tools. Tables of widespread folk names and their cognates provided.
