Notes
Research investigates characteristics that enable dyers to identify muds suitable for dyeing. Observations and experiments show that muds which give good results frequently have oily films on the surface. These films, produced by the growth of aerobic bacteria, are a useful indicator of the underlying presence of reduced iron, as are the colour and texture of hte mud.
