Māori names
māikaika, māmāika (Williams 1971, Taylor 1847, Makereti 1938)
Food
Makereti records this plant as a food. Also uses māikaika as a name for Orthoceras solandri (now O. novae-zeelandiae) and Arthropodium cirratum.
"There are several members of this family which all produce edible roots, but the Maikaika has the largest, which when roasted, are not unlike the potatoe, they are sometimes found as large as small kidney potatoes." (Taylor 1847).
