86 species of bryophytes, lichens and vascular plants collected from Campbell and Auckland Islands, and screened for antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity. Proportion of extracts with some biological activity highest for liverworts (25/29), intermediate for flowering plants (17/26) and lowest for mosses and hornworts (4/22). Extracts of 6 species showed repeatable, high biological activity. These are Clasmatocolea vermicularis, Hypogymnia lugubris, Pseudocyphellaria coronata, Ranunculus pinguis, Telaranea sp., Tmesipteris tannensis). The cytotoxic activity of an extract of R. pinguis was due to the glucoside ranunculin.
