Notes on Waimahoe Bush which lies immediately south of the Waikanae River. Two large trees of wharangi, Melicope ternata, across the railway line at (formerly) Elder"s Crossing, of special interest.

At important tangi on Waikanae Marae trees would be visited for headwreaths and branches.

Elder writes "the late Mr. W. Carkeek thought he had some written evidence of plants brought down from Taranaki by Te Atiawa which probably included wharangi, and that these could well be the plants referred to, with some association with their homeland."
