From chapter on Brunner's expedition to the middle of the `Middle Island" (South Island); an extract from journal on preparation of tī and fernroots: (They)... "extract the sweet particles of the former by beating and washing it in a proper quantity of water, and when about the consistency of honey they soak in the liquid some layers of wellbeaten and cooked fernroot, which, when properly moistened, is eaten and has a similar relish to gingerbread."
....(root of tī) 12 hours baking "found it excellent but rather too sweet for a diet; however, this and the fish make a fine meal"
