p.102. At second meeting of New Zealand Advancement Society "shewn specimens of the New Zealand Orchilla weed and the dye extracted from it; the European weed is sold as high as 80 pound per ton" "The same contributor, Mr Smith, also produced pieces of sacking, canvas drill, thread and cambric, the latter of very beautiful fabric, manufactured in England from New Zealand flax by ?Donban"s [Donallan's] process. Another member, produced samples of oxhide, goatskins and horseskins tanned with indigenous barks - differing little, as far as may be judged from appearance - from the same articles manufactured at home."

p.123. "In my rambles ashore today met with an abundance of a wild black fruit with a sweet luscious taste, called "konini", and used by the French for pickles and preserves"

p.135 Description of many uses of flax. "Fishing nets of enormous length and lines of enormous strength; baskets; eel traps; sandals etc. etc. .... garments of various quality, from the costly kaitaka, woven from the finest material, white and glistening like silk , to the kakaou maua or common mat, the apparel of slaves." "Green leaves are also applied to the same uses as the Papyri of antiquity, when paper cannot be obtained - a knife"s point doing duty for the "stylum" of the Roman scribe"

p.218 (Waimea Plains). "A little further, in one of a row of three pretty little cabins overspread with evergreens, lived a spinner of New Zealand flax: an Ayrshire man, .... He was just sending off a quantity of his manufacture to Nelson, which "tho of a very superior tenacity to ordinary cordage, he considered ill adapted for many purposes to which English hemp is applied successfully, the standing rigging of ships, for instance, on account of its being affected by atmospheric changes."
