Neither genus Juncus or Luzula are as rich in oil as Cordyline and Phormium. Juncus seeds contain major amounts of palmitic, linoleic and oleic acids and minor amounts of linolenic, stearic, and other fatty acids. The seeds of Juncus and Luzula do not contain the high amounts of linoleic acid that those of Cordyline and Phormium do, but contain a greater variety of fatty acids. Small amounts of C12, C14, C15, C17, C19, C20, C22, C24 acids (absent from Agavaceae). Clear correlation between botanical classification and seed fat composition. A pattern of fatty acids for each genus of monocotyledons can be seen.
