"Dieffenbach saw the taro grown at Queen Charlotte Sound in 1839. The kūmara was cultivated about Nelson." (Best in letter to Beattie). Beattie has attached notes: "re kūmara, furtherest south Taumutu" Taumutu is on the shores of Lake Ellesmere.
