Cooking bands. Placed round circumference of hangi as a raised rim, preventing food heaped up on heated stones from falling out.

Paepae raranga is a plaited band 4" to 6" wide made from green flax. Also called paepae whakatu. Papae umu is West Coast term (North Island). Paepae whiri is a twisted band. Plaiting techniques described in detail. (Te Rangi Hiroa 1924: 350-353)
