Not eaten in New Guinea, the probable source of domestication. Flowering habit described. Absence or rarity of seedlings. Tested for sterility. Concluded have a male sterile form unlikely to pollinate other Cordyline or itself. Ti assumed an important social role when it was brought to Hawaii. Found on many archaeological sites. Sterility factor limited species in its distribution and cultivation in the prehistoric Hawaiian Islands.
