Introduction by Julius Haast on 5 main vegetation zones of Canterbury. Armstrong presents a list of plants found in areas in and around Christchurch - Riccarton Bush, Dry Bush, Mt. Pleasant, Port Hills, sand hills and swamps.
Some uses of plants are given: Drimys axillaris (horopito) ...aromatic and pungent, used by Māoris for various diseases, the `Winter"s bark" of New Zealand. Hoheria populnea (lacebark); bark a demulcent drink. Phormium tenax (flax); roots are substitute for sarsaparilla. Coriaria ruscifolia (tutu); beverage from juice. Alectryon excelsus (tītoki); anointing oil. Macropiper excelsum (kawakawa); roots, leaves for beverage. Infusion of leaves for toothache.
