Nicholas accompanied Samuel Marsden from New South Wales on his first visit to New Zealand. In the brig "Active", they journeyed to the Bay of Islands and Thames districts during 1814-1815. In his journal, Nicholas included observations he made of Māori life and customs, interactions with his party, natural history of region. There are observations on food cultivation, diet, dyes, tattooing, tools used, flax and timber uses and more.
