"The arapuhi plant grew only in one place - at Hapeka, near Hawaruwaru. It has not been seen since the days of the old men, so that it appears to be extinct. It was alleged to have some peculiarity in the formation of its branches, from which they derived the idea of the twelve years and twelve months in each year." (Shand 1911 p. 203)

p.115 "It was said to be in existence on the arrival of the Māoris; it has evidently been destroyed by the stock."
