Teone Tikao, 1850-1927, was one of the most respected elders of the South Island. Trained as a boy in the ways of the tohunga, he was recognized as having a vast knowledge of Māori mythology, history and culture. In 1920, Herries Beattie spent a fortnight with him and recorded much of this knowledge.
