M'Donnell Thomas 1834. Extracts from Mr. M'Donnell's Ms. Journal containing observations on New Zealand. Victorian New Zealand Reprint Series, Hocken Library 6
Notes
To attract public attention in Britain to the opportunities in New Zealand for settlement and profitable investment. Section on flax. Author feels that prejudice against flax is because it is not always treated properly. "Cut the plant at the right season, let the flax be well dried, carefully packed in lengths, and screwed ; then the superiority of New Zealand hemp over that of Europe will be manifest." Praises durability of flax used in rigging of the ship "Sir George Murray".
