Twenty water soluble mucilages obtained from plants in Liliaceae, Amaryllidaceae, Dioscoreaceae, Orchidaceae, Saxifragaceae, Malvaceae, Plantaginaceae families tested for hypoglycemic activity on administration to normal mice. Considerable activity observed for most of mucilages isolated from plants in Malvaceae family. Also in seed of Plantago asiatica. New Zealand species of Malvaceae = Plagianthus species (ribbonwood), Hoheria (Houhere, lacebark) and Hibiscus (rare)
