Each chapter reviews developments in Chemistry Division under each of its 9 directors. An early director, J. S. Maclaurin, worked in his later years on flax fibre and cellulose production, but much of his work is unpublished. Among others: B. C. Aston (poisons in native plants), Hosking and Brandt (extractives from New Zealand trees), Joiner, Ledger and Maskill-Smith on utilization of flax, especially the wool pack factory in Foxton.
