In preparing this book the author undertook three types of research. 1) an extensive review of the literature on Polynesia 2) interviews with many Polynesian healers 3) 20 years of botanical collecting.

The author looks at both traditional Polynesian medical practices and also Polynesian medical practices today. A chapter is devoted to the species used.
