p.69 Migration (heke) of Maruiwi who lived in Waimana Valley, Bay of Plenty. Argument between chief Awatope and stepson Koira on proper time for digging and storing kūmara. Awatope reinforced his views by striking Koira, an Arawa. Koira told his grandfather Rakeiao who cursed the Maruiwi (Whakatahi curse). Then no place of peace or safety. Impelled to leave, attacked other tribes, driven from place to place. Eventually one dark night walked over steep cliff and fell into bed of Tutaekuri. The cliff edge was hidden by growth of kiokio, Blechnum capense agg. [now Blechnum novae-zelandiae]. Place of tragedy called Waro-o-Mauriwi, within a mile of Te Pōhue, on Napier-Taupo coach road.
