"The magnificent record of d'Urville's first circumnavigation as expedition commander, following his voyage with Duperrey in the Coquille, now renamed the Astrolabe in commemoration of La Pérouse's missing vessel ... during the three years cruise (1826-9) d'Urville spent 67 days (Jan./Mar. 1827) in New Zealand waters and ashore. From landfall near Cape Farewell he sailed into Tasman Bay, discovered French Pass and made most detailed coastal surveys around Cook Strait on his route up the East Coast to the Bay of Islands, exploring Hauraki Gulf. [With relation to the 5 vols. of Histoire du voyage] apart from background references in vol. 1, vols. 2 & 3 deal almost entirely with New Zealand.
