Ngā Rauropi Whakaoranga

Seed fats of 13 species of Astelia and 2 of Collospermum, which is closely related, examined. Amounts of oil vary from 12.8 - 48.5%. Considerably greater than Juncaceae, in some cases greater than Agavaceae. Linoleic acid generally less than Agavaceae, greater than Juncaceae. First time gamma-linolenic acid found in monocotyledons. Significant amounts of gamma-linolenic acid found in 3 New Zealand species of Astelia, A. solandri, A. trinervia, A. banksii - up to 25% of total seed oil. (cf. 9% in evening primrose). On basis of fatty acid composition, fall into 2 groups; one containing 12-30% gamma-linolenic acid, the other none.
